Staff guide: A Sandbox is a course used for planning, testing and experimenting.
Sandbox courses are used for personal testing, training and experimenting. You can add other staff to your Sandbox course and use them for course planning and trying out tools and processes.
Don’t use Sandbox courses for teaching students. Any student accounts will be removed.
Request a personal Blackboard Sandbox course
- Follow this link to create a personal Blackboard Sandbox course. The course will appear under the Sandbox term heading in your list of Blackboard courses.
- Follow this link to download an Ultra Example course to see an example of a working course. This example course has been provided by Blackboard.
Request multiple Sandbox courses
You can request as many Sandbox courses as you require, but can only create one Sandbox using the link to our Sandbox CourseBuilder tool above.
- Follow this link to request a Custom Course. Select the use option: “Personal Use/Sandbox“. The course will appear under the Sandbox term heading in your list of Blackboard courses.
- Custom Sandbox courses are created using the template used for teaching Banner modules. If you are using this Sandbox to plan a new Programme Course or Custom Course (for example, for staff/student training), let us know in the ticket, and we can use a different template.
If you have an Nhs account raise a ServiceLine ticket to request a Sandbox.

- Refresh your screen if you see an error when you try to log into the Course Builder tool.
