Staff Guide: Frequently asking questions about the University’s decision to leave Turnitin for AY 2026/27
I have an assignment open right now, do my students and markers need to do anything immediately?
No, any assignment that is currently open, or would close before the start of Semester 1 (Monday 14 September 2026), can continue to use Turnitin.
I’m preparing my assignments for my module for the next academic year. Should I pause or make them?
You should pause making assignments for the next academic year (2026/27) in Turnitin LTI, Turnitin Direct or Blackboard Assignments with Turnitin Similarity Scoring. By mid-August iSolutions will create guides and training for programmes that have previously used Turnitin. This will be communicated in further updates.
You can still create Blackboard Assignments (without Turnitin enabled) or Blackboard Tests in your course.
Assignments in other systems, such as eAssignments, can be created as usual as the removal of Turnitin will not stop the assignment being uploaded, marked or sent to Banner, unlike the systems listed above.
I only know how to use Turnitin for assignments, is there any support for setting up my assignments in a different way?
We are in the process of building resources to support you in setting up your assignments in time for the start of the academic year and we will provide further update on this in due course. In the meantime, if you need support, please reach out to ServiceLine or visit eLearn for existing resources.
I’m concerned about Academic Responsibility and Conduct in light of this change, is there support available?
We are working on sourcing a suitable replacement as a matter of priority. We will consult with key stakeholders to include academic leadership and the University’s Academic Responsibility and Conduct Network through this process and further information will be shared when available.
I’m using Gradescope instead of Turnitin. Is that product impacted?
Yes, Gradescope is owned by Turnitin so it will be subject to the same terms. If you are using Gradescope please contact ServiceLine for further advice.
Is Turnitin Authorship also impacted?
Yes, use of Turnitin authorship is also affected.
