Panopto – Creating an audio/video assignment in a Blackboard Ultra course

This guide shows how to set up the preferred video assignment route of using Blackboard Ultra assignments, which allows students to submit a video or audio recording from Panopto. Unlike the Panopto assignment folder, this process automatically makes an assessment folder for you, making it easier for students to submit videos and for you to see and mark them.

Example scenario

For an assessment, you want students to submit a written essay or a PowerPoint presentation, and you would also like your students to submit an audio/video presentation in Panopto. Ideally, you would like to keep all of the work collected together and be able to mark it in the standard Blackboard marking interface.

You wish to keep it nice and straightforward for your students to submit/make a video from any device they might own, and any video format, no matter how long or large the video file is. You also wish to make it easy for you, other makers and external markers to access/view the videos as well.

How to set it up

On your Blackboard Ultra course, set up an assignment as normal; we have instructions on how to do this.

Make sure that you explain to your students in the description and additional information that you wish students to submit a Panopto recording.

Alongside this information, you should link to our eLearn help guide for students on how to submit a Panopto recording.

Then, students will submit any documents along with their Panopto video for the assignment.

In terms of marking, you will then be able to mark the assignment the same as any other Blackboard assignment, but be able to see an embedded playable Panopto video submitted by the student.

If you would like to see a step-by-step guide for this, Panopto has made a useful guide; however, our eLearn guides on Blackboard assignments will also help.
