Statement 1 – Student Support Recommendations

Estimated reading time: four minutes.

Staff guide: explaining Statement 1 of 6 of the Blackboard Module Accessibility Statements. Acknowledging this statement, confirms that the teaching team review the Student Support Recommendations (SSRs) for the module, put reasonable adjustments in place, and agree alternatives with the Student Disability and Inclusion Team when needed.

If this statement does not apply to this module, answer No.

Why this matters

SSRs set out the reasonable adjustments that support equitable access to teaching, learning, and assessment under the Equality Act (2010). The Student Disability and Inclusion (SD&I) team produces SSRs after a student support appointment and share them with the teaching team. Everyone who teaches the student needs to act on the adjustments.

SSRs sit alongside Additional Exam Recommendations (AERs). Blackboard shows indicators for students with SSRs and AERs so the teaching team can identify needs and open the SSR from your module.

Review and implementation checklist

Review this checklist before submitting a response to Statement 1.

Statement 1 asks that the teaching team:

  • read and review the SSR list for the module and noted recent updates.
  • implement recommended reasonable adjustments that apply to teaching resources, and assessments on Blackboard.
  • discuss alternatives with the Student Disability and Inclusion Team when adjustments are not feasible.
  • record actions so that they can be maintained.

If the teaching team completes these actions, select Yes.

How to check SSRs

  1. Go to Details and Actions in the Blackboard module.
  2. Select Books and Tools, then Student Support Recommendations.
  3. Review the SSR list and note any additional exam recommendations.
  4. Check the last updated column for recent changes and confirm actions.

FAQs

Do I have permission to view SSRs?

Yes. Instructors can view SSRs and AER indicators in Blackboard to implement teaching and assessment adjustments.

What is the difference between SSR and AER?

SSRs cover teaching and assessment adjustments across the module. AERs cover exam arrangements. Blackboard flags both and links you to the SSR.

Who agrees alternatives when an adjustment does not fit?

You liaise with the Student Disability and Inclusion team and agree an alternative. The practitioner’s details appear on the SSR.
