Staff guide: using Vevox to run polls, quizzes, surveys, and Q&A in online sessions.
To use Vevox in an online teaching session, students will ideally need a second device (e.g. a phone) to answer Vevox questions while following the session, but could also participate by opening a new tab and entering https://vevox.app.
It can also help to share the direct link to the session, via ‘Copy web app link to clipboard’ in your Vevox dashboard.
Vevox, Collaborate and Teams all have different ‘chat’ options so you will want to clarify how you will use this in the session:
- Vevox has a Q&A option where participants can submit questions or comments and upvote others’ contributions. Comments will be shown in ‘liked’ order. Q&A can be turned off in the meeting settings.
- Collaborate has a chat pane that displays messages in chronological order. It can be turned off in the session settings.
- Teams has a chat pane that displays messages in chronological order, but does include the option to ‘like’ others’ comments. The chat pane is always present for signed in users.
Vevox in PowerPoint with Teams
- Vevox has a new Office 365 add-in that will replace the original PowerPoint add-in. See this guide for the benefits of the new add-in and how to install it and start using it to deliver polls embedded in PowerPoint.
- If your Vevox questions are embedded in your lecture slides, open the PowerPoint and start the slide show.
- Join your Teams meeting.
- Select the option to share the Screen or Window that displays your slide show, instead of selecting PowerPoint Live or Present in Teams. If you have 2 screens you can choose PowerPoint present view so you can see your notes and next slides.
- In PowerPoint, go into the Slide Show and move through the slides as you would in a face-to-face session.
Vevox Present View with Teams
If you have created your poll questions within the Vevox dashboard rather than within PowerPoint, you can run these using the Present View in Vevox.
See the Vevox guide to Using Vevox with Microsoft Teams for full guides and videos.
- Log in to the Vevox dashboard.
- Join your Teams meeting.
- When you share your screen, select either Desktop or your Vevox dahsboard under Window.
- Go to the Vevox dashboard, select ‘Present Fullscreen’ and run through the Vevox questions as you would in a face-to-face session.
Note that all the instructions above assume you are working with a single screen. If you have a second screen, your options for monitoring Collaborate or Teams activity while sharing your Vevox PowerPoint or Present view increase, and you can use ‘Present Fullscreen’ from the Vevox dashboard.
Vevox in PowerPoint with Collaborate
- If your Vevox questions are embedded in your lecture slides, open the PowerPoint (independently of your Collaborate meeting) and connect it to the Vevox meeting.
- Join your Collaborate meeting.
- Select Share Application/Screen – not Share Files.
- Share Your Entire Screen. Selecting the PowerPoint under Application Window won’t work, as when you go into the Slide Show it won’t show in Collaborate.
- In PowerPoint, go into the Slide Show view and poll your Vevox slides as you would in a face-to-face session.
Note that you will not be able to see the chat pane in Collaborate at the same time as doing this, so may wish to turn this off in the Session Settings.
Vevox Present View with Collaborate
If you have created your poll questions within the Vevox dashboard rather than within PowerPoint, you can run these using the Present View in Vevox.
- Log in to the Vevox dashboard.
- Join your Collaborate meeting.
- Select Share Application/Screen.
- Share Chrome Tab and select Vevox.
- Go to the Vevox dashboard, select ‘Present Fullscreen’ and run through the Vevox questions as you would in a face-to-face session.
This method allows you to go back and check on the chat pane in Collaborate while still sharing the Vevox present screen, but alternatively you could share Your Entire Screen, and run the Vevox questions in the same way.
